How Many Appointments Does Invisalign Actually Need?

The short answer

Aligner patients typically come in every six to eight weeks. Fixed braces need adjusting every four to six weeks. Over a treatment of eighteen months, that is roughly ten to twelve visits with aligners against fifteen to eighteen with braces.

The difference exists because aligners are changed at home. Each tray is worn for one to two weeks and you move to the next one yourself. What happens in the chair is a check, not a procedure, and checks can be spaced further apart than adjustments.

Before treatment starts

Two appointments. The first is the assessment: examination, iTero scan, photographs, X-rays where needed. The second is where we go through the plan, the simulation, the timeline and the fee. Some patients decide on the spot, others take the plan away, and there is no reason to rush that.

Your aligners are then manufactured, which takes a few weeks. The fitting appointment is the longest of the treatment. Attachments are bonded to the relevant teeth, the first trays are fitted and checked, and you are shown how to insert and remove them. Allow an hour.

During treatment

Routine visits are short, usually fifteen to twenty minutes. I check that the teeth are tracking, meaning that they are actually where the plan says they should be at that stage. I check the attachments are intact and the fit is still snug, and I hand over the next batch of trays.

Some visits include a small amount of enamel reduction between teeth to create space, and some involve elastics being introduced. Neither adds much time.

Tracking is the whole point of these appointments. If a tooth is not following the plan, catching it at week eight is a small correction. Catching it at week twenty-four is a refinement.

At the end

Attachments are removed and the teeth polished. We scan again for your retainers, and I bond a fixed retainer behind the lower front teeth. You come back to collect and fit the removable retainer, then for a check a few months later, and periodically after that.

Retention checks are brief but they matter more than people expect. Most relapse happens because nobody looked for two years.

If your schedule is unpredictable

This is where aligners have a genuine practical advantage, and in Dubai it comes up constantly. You leave with several trays in hand, so a trip of a few weeks does not interrupt anything. With fixed braces, a missed adjustment means the wire keeps working unmonitored, which is not dangerous but is not productive either.

Tell me at the planning stage if you travel regularly, or if you are back home for a long stretch each summer. It changes how far ahead I dispense trays and where the checks fall. It is far easier to plan around than to fix afterwards.

What missing appointments actually costs you

One missed check is not a problem. A pattern of them is, because the plan stops being verified against reality. Teeth drift off track quietly, and by the time it is visible the correction is larger than it needed to be.

The same is true of running past your last tray without coming in. Aligners hold teeth as much as they move them, and wearing the final tray indefinitely is not a substitute for finishing the treatment properly.
